Nantucket High School is pleased to welcome several new teachers to the staff this year: Darren Lucas, Elissa Gilgen, Paul Buccheri, Daniel Farrell, and Mykala Hedberg-Seitz.
Lucas is originally from Montauk, NY and moved to Nantucket in August. He is one of three new math teachers;this is his first year teaching math at any school. Before moving to the island, he worked as a teaching assistant at an elementary school in Centerville, MA. Outside of school, Lucas enjoys cooking, gardening, exploring the island, and playing video games. Some of his favorite shows are Survivor, The Walking Dead, and Jeopardy. He also enjoys listening to rock and alternative music, with the Foo Fighters being his favorite band - and one he’s seen the band in concert multiple times. Next summer, he hopes to visit the island’s different museums and monuments and looks forward to spending a lot of time outside.
Elissa Gilgen, also a new math teacher, moved to the island from Hayesville, NC, a small, quaint town in the mountains. She lives here with her husband and three dogs, which she loves taking for long walks on the beaches. For the past 13 years, Gligen has worked as a chemistry and physics teacher. Currently, Gilgen is teaching Algebra I and Geometry, which she enjoys as “they’re both challenging and useful.” When she is not teaching, she can often be found helping out with the Drama Club’s production of The Matchmaker.“It’s [been] great getting to know the wonderful cast and crew,” she said. “Nantucket has some very talented students.” Gligen’s favorite hobbies include beekeeping and gardening.“Bees are vital to the ecosystem and have been suffering great losses over the past few years,” she said. “We hope to raise awareness of their necessity to humans...while harvesting some tasty local honey too.” One of her favorite television networks is the Food Network because of her love for cooking and interest in tasting new flavors. “There’s little I haven’t tried and few things I won’t eat again,” she said.
Paul Buccheri is another a new addition to the math department. Originally from East Bridgewater, MA, he taught math for two years in the Abington, MA school system. This year Buccheri is teaching Geometry and Algebra. One of his favorite foods is pizza. He enjoys Nantucket very much and is excited to see what the island will bring him next.
Daniel Farrell is a new faculty member in the history department. He grew up on Cape Cod and went to school in Western Massachusetts. After graduating, he worked in the trades and traveled to places like Ireland, Peru, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. He then came back to what is a family business: teaching. He worked in a middle and high school in NH for two years and then at Frontier Regional High School in South Deerfield, MA before moving to Nantucket, arriving on the island the day before he had to start school. Currently he is teaching two sections of World History II and three sections of U.S. History II. He loves spending time outside, and enjoys watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Flight of the Conchords, Deadwood, and Peaky Blinders.
Mykala Hedberg-Seitz is a new P.E. teacher. She moved to the island with her husband, a firefights, from Oxnard, CA, a small beach town, where she was a tennis pro, fitness instructor, and personal trainer. She moved to Nantucket full-time in January, but has been working here for the past five summers. In addition to teaching P.E., she is also assisting in English classes. Outside of work, her hobbies include cooking, baking, and being active outdoors. Her favorite foods are Swedish food and sushi, and her favorite sport is tennis. One of the things she loves about the island is the friendly community feeling. “Everyone is very welcoming and helpful,” she said.
All of these new teachers are already making a big impact on Nantucket High School.
